Super Simple Life Hacks To Prepare Your Home for A Hurricane {PICS}

Hurricane Dorian is heading our way and Hampton Roads will feel the effects of heavy rain, wind and flooding.

During Hurricane Irene in 2011 it was my first year as a homeowner and we really didn’t know what to expect. Our backyard tends to flood and we get what we like to call our very own lake during heavy rain.

In reality it’s just the storm drains overflowing.

We worried the “lake” may reach our home so we moved furniture away from the back door, covered it in plastic headed to the station.

We hunkered down for the night in the conference room. My husband came with the cats (can’t leave the pets behind after all!) and we weathered the storm. Pun intended.

this is my beloved Bailey who we had to say goodbye to a few years ago. We miss you!

Since then we’ve learned a little more about what to expect during a storm and have come up with some life hacks to get us through as well.

Lifehack #1
Fill the washer with ice! It can act as a cooler if the power goes out and then you can spin the water away after

Lifehack #2
Fill your bathtub with water. Again if you lose power you can use this to flush the toilet. SUPER IMPORTANT!!!

Lifehack #3
Fill Ziploc bags with water and freeze them. You can also do this with empty water bottles (you know you have some rolling around the backseat of your car!) It helps your fridge stay cooler during a power outage.

Lifehack #4
Freeze washcloths! Soak those babies now and freeze em so if the power goes out you can cool yourself down.

Lifehack #5
Make a DIY place for your pup to poop! Put pieces of sod in a kiddie pool and put it in your garage. You have a safe place for your dogs to potty during the storm.

and most importantly it’s not a life hack but it’s a LIFE RULE: Don’t leave your pets behind!

Believe it or not, lots of dogs and other animal companions are left behind every time there’s a natural disaster. Dogs kept on chains will swim to exhaustion and then drown, and there are chained dogs everywhere.
