Blake Shelton Reveals Why He Threatened Dan + Shay at the CMAs

Blake Shelton revealed he jokingly threatened Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney right before the single of the year was announced at the CMA Awards Wednesday night. They were both up for Single of the Year for “God’s Country” and Dan + Shay for “Speechless”

Blake told People magazine,

“They were sitting directly behind me and I said, ‘Hey, if you guys win this award, I’m gonna kick your ass, because I haven’t been nominated for any stuff in, like, a hundred years.”

It has been a while…Blake hasn’t even been nominated since 2015. He told reporters at the CMAs that he started to have a pity party

“You know, I’m not the new guy any more. … You always wonder what it’ll feel like whenever that starts slipping away a little bit. I think about that stuff a lot, and I always wonder, like, man, how am I gonna feel when this kind of goes away, and I’m not that hot any more in the industry? And I was kinda okay with it. I thought, my God, I’ve got a lot more out of this than I thought I would. I was, like, having that kind of a pity party.”

Then he heard “God’s Country”

“I heard the song, and it was almost like an awakening. It was like it re-energized me. I don’t want to be done with this. I want to keep making records, and it just kinda turned everything around for me. And then I’ll be damned if it didn’t literally turn everything around for me as far as airplay and even being nominated for something again.”

and he won!

So in the end things were peaceful with Dan + Shay (who won their own CMA for Duo of the Year)

Thank God we didn’t have to fight,” Shelton said, “I think that might have helped with the ratings if they thought there was actually a chance that people were gonna throw down and fight on the CMAs.”
