Halloween is this Saturday, and if you’re planning to take the kids out trick-or-treating, check your city’s rules first. Most local cities limit trick-or-treating to children 12 and under, with Chesapeake as the exception at age 14. In most places, the fun starts around dusk, about 6 p.m., and wraps up by 8 p.m. Going outside the age or time limits is technically a misdemeanor, but parents and guardians walking with their children are always allowed.
Here’s the rundown by city:
- Norfolk: Ages 12 and under. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.
- Virginia Beach: Ages 12 and under. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.
- Chesapeake: Ages 14 and under. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.
- Portsmouth: Ages 12 and under. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.
- Suffolk: Officially known as “Meet ‘N Treat Day.” Treats should be collected by 8 p.m.
- Hampton: Ages 12 and under. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.
- Newport News: Ages 12 and under, and no one past seventh grade. Parents may walk with their kids but are asked not to wear masks. Trick-or-treating ends at 8 p.m.

- York County: Recommended for ages 12 and under, 6 to 8 p.m.
- Williamsburg: Recommended for ages 12 and under, 6 to 8 p.m.
