From waterfront fireworks to drone shows to all-day festivals, there is something for every family across the region. Here’s your city-by-city guide to the best Independence Day celebrations happening this July 4th weekend.
Chesapeake
Celebrate Freedom Concert and Fireworks Spectacular 📅 Friday, July 3, 2026 | 5:00 PM 📍 Chesapeake City Park, 900 City Park Drive
Get a head start on the holiday with Chesapeake’s annual celebration the night before the Fourth. The event is free and open to the public, featuring food trucks, games, children’s activities, and live patriotic music from the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Band. The evening wraps up with a sky-illuminating fireworks display by Pyrotecnico.
💡 Good to know: Parking is $10 cash only on-site. Bring your own chairs or blanket — tents, feather flags, and oversized umbrellas are not permitted. Visit the Parks, Recreation and Tourism tent for free giveaways while supplies last.
Hampton
Downtown Hampton Waterfront Celebration 📅 Friday, July 4, 2026 | 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM 📍 Downtown Hampton Waterfront, Settler’s Landing Road
Hampton is bringing something extra special this year — fireworks AND a 400-drone show over the downtown waterfront. Three performance stages will keep the energy going all evening, including a headline performance by The Downtown Band, a high-energy cover band from Nashville. Settler’s Landing Road will be closed to vehicular traffic, with bleachers and vendors set up along the waterfront.
4th at the Fort 📅 Friday, July 4, 2026 | 8:45 AM – 9:30 PM 📍 Fort Monroe
For an all-day experience steeped in history, Fort Monroe is hosting one of its most ambitious Fourth of July events ever. The day begins with a Civic Celebration on the Parade Ground, followed by the Out of Many, One Festival at Patton Street Park featuring family activities, demonstrations, and a taste of Virginia from across the state. The evening closes with a star-spangled concert on the Main Stage and the largest Fort Monroe fireworks show to date at 9:15 PM.
Newport News

Celebrate along the historic James River shoreline at Newport News’ beloved waterfront tradition. Stars in the Sky features live entertainment, food vendors, and family-friendly activities before the night ends with a spectacular fireworks display. Free Historic Attractions — All of July In honor of the Semiquincentennial, select Newport News historic sites are offering FREE admission throughout the month of July, including the Virginia War Museum, Lee Hall Mansion, Lee Hall Depot, Historic Endview, and the Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center. A perfect way to make the holiday weekend a full history experience.
Norfolk

One of Hampton Roads’ most beloved Fourth of July traditions returns for its 43rd year. Head to Town Point Park for live patriotic music, all-American fare — hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue, seafood, cotton candy, and more — and one of the region’s most spectacular fireworks displays lighting up the sky above the Elizabeth River at 9:30 PM. Free and open to the public.
Portsmouth

Portsmouth is throwing a beach music party you won’t want to miss! Dust off your shag steps and head out for an evening of classic coastal Carolina sounds with The Original Rhondels performing from 5:00–8:00 PM. The Tidewater Concert Band then takes the stage with patriotic music from 8:00–9:30 PM, closing out the night with a fireworks show at 9:30 PM.

Virginia Beach

Ring in America’s birthday at the Virginia Beach oceanfront with free live concerts at three parks simultaneously, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at 9:30 PM. 💡 Good to know: Limited on-site parking begins at 2 PM, cash only. Arrive early — when lots fill, Edwin Drive may close. Portions of the trail will be closed July 1–5 and the boardwalk will be closed on July 4.
Weekly Fireworks — All Summer Long Can’t get enough? Virginia Beach hosts weekly fireworks displays from July 4th weekend through Labor Day — every Wednesday at 10:00 PM and every Sunday at 9:30 PM.
