“Sound of Metal” is the best movie I’ve seen in a year! ~ CASH {Watch}

Just the other day I was reading about a new term, “show fatigue.” It’s the frustration of not being able to find anything on the multiple streaming platforms that you’re currently paying for. Crazy, right? I know.

I think I was experiencing this the other weekend. I was like, “there isn’t anything to watch.” When in fact, I know that there is, but I don’t know where to start when it comes to finding something that will keep me engaged for a couple of hours. Seriously, the past year, I can’t really think of any great movie that I’ve seen? When “Tiger King” is the most-watched show on Netflix in 2020, we have a problem.

Then, the Academy nominated their best pictures. Again, because of COVID, new movies have been scarce. Which movies could make the list for best picture? Unless you have Apple TV and you’re a big Tom Hanks fan. I still haven’t seen that submarine movie. Is it good?

Through the suggestion of the academy, I thought I would take a look at the movies they thought were the best during the year. Honestly, I’d never heard of many of the movies and decided to start with “Sound of Metal.”

“Sound of Metal” follows Ruben, who’s played by Riz Ahmed, who is also nominated for best actor. Ruben is a heavy metal drummer who jams in his girlfriend’s band and Ruben just so happens to be going deaf. His girlfriend, and the lead singer of his band, Lou, played by Olivia Cooke, who, just like Ruben, is a struggling addict trying to survive in a world of loud music, parties, and temptations at every corner. The pair are hit with a crazy roadblock when Ruben is faced with the reality that he’s losing his hearing. “Sound of Metal” is rated “R” and runs for 2 hours. You can find it on Amazon Prime.

First, I didn’t even know this movie existed until I saw that it was nominated for best picture. Then, when I saw that it’s about a heavy metal drummer, I knew I had to watch it. That’s what we did on Friday night. We sat on the couch and watched, “Sound of Metal.”

This movie is insane and really got me thinking. The film’s synopsis talks about a story about a man whose life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing. Yeah, there’s some of that, but the movie is more about addiction. If I were to try and describe to you my older brother, I would say watch this movie. His uncontrollable outbursts, his inability to process info during a crisis, and his devotion to the things he loves are amazing.

This movie was sad, encouraging, and real. I found myself becoming very uncomfortable with the scenes where Ruben is beginning to realize that his hearing is gone. Almost a sense of anxiety trying to imagine what it would be like trying to accept the fact that you’ll never be able to hear the same again.

Ruben’s journey from the beginning to the end is amazing. His personal growth through loss will make you smile and cry. The film is uplifting, real, and sad at the same time. Whoever was in charge of sound and providing us with a small sample of what life would be like if you couldn’t hear deserves to win a academy award. I loved everything about this movie.

So far, this is my pick for best picture and best actor.
