Tyler Hubbard released his first solo single, “5 Foot 9,” on Friday (May 20th).
Tyler wrote the song about his wife, Hayley, but missed her height by an inch. Whoops!
In the chorus, Tyler sings, “God makes 5 foot 9, brown eyes in a sundress / Loves Tim McGraw and a small-town accent / Ain’t no way that me and this truck made her fall in love / Jack makes good whiskey / But God makes the good stuff.”
Tyler says, “Well, I gotta be honest. I have a confession. I missed it by an inch. She’s actually 5’10”. I went home that night and said, ‘Babe, remind me again how tall you are exactly. You’re about 5′ 9″ right?’ She said, ‘Yeah, I’m 5’10”.’ And I thought, well, here’s a new song I wrote today. Sorry, I cut you short by an inch but I hope you like it.”
The Georgia native wrote “5 Foot 9” with Jaren Johnston and Chase McGill, and co-produced the track with Jordan Schmidt.
“So, ‘5 Foot 9’ has been a special song for me since the day we wrote it,” says Tyler. “I wrote it with Chase McGill and Jaren Johnston, and it’s just a reminder to take in the beauty and the simplicity of life, whether it’s dirt roads, whether it’s rain drops, whether it’s country music. And then in the chorus for me, it’s the bigger, more important picture of hey, the real good stuff in life? Just the reminder that God’s responsible for making that happen and just taking that in and letting that be a daily reminder for myself and my fans. So, definitely love this song and it holds a special place in my heart.”
Tyler and Brian Kelley have some dates to play as Florida Georgia Line. After those dates, both Tyler and Brian will be all-in on their solo careers.
