Portsmouth Humane Society Issues Plea to Community for Help as Dog Kennels Fill Up

Shelters across Hampton Roads and the entire country are struggling to save the lives of the animals we care for so deeply. Right now, Portsmouth Humane is out of kennel space for dogs.

The shelter was this full in early June, and no pets were euthanized based on space thanks to the support of our community and the hard work of their dedicated team.

They are again asking for the community to come together to save these animals’ lives by fostering, adopting, and donating.

  • Fostering a homeless animal will help free up shelter space and help that pet get adopted. Fostering is completely free and open to all! Portsmouth Humane handles the supplies and veterinary care. Get started by texting or calling 757-414-6478!

  • PHS currently has over 400 animals in care between the shelter building and dedicated foster homes. That’s about a hundred more than usual. The cost of feeding, caring for, and providing medical treatment to this many animals is incredibly high and more than our regular income can support. You can help with a gift to the shelter.  Donate now.

  • Adopting. Visit our shelter or check out available animals online at https://portsmouthhumanesociety.org/adoptable-animals/

  • Reuniting found pets with their people. Friendly, uninjured found pets can be reunited with their owners outside of the shelter. Call 757-397-6004 to find out more.

  • Looking for your lost pet at the shelter. Visit between 8 am and 5 pm with photos of your pet or records to show ownership and your photo ID.
