Tina Turner Inspired Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings to Write This Classic Country Song

The music world is mourning the loss of Tina Turner who died Wednesday, May 24th at the age of 83 following a long illness.

Although Turner was known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” she recorded several country songs through the years.

Her first solo album, “Tina Turns the Country On!” was released in September 1974 by United Artists Records, It contains cover songs from country and folk artists like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Olivia Newton-John, Dolly Parton and James Taylor.

Here’s her version of “Help Me Make It Through the Night”.

In addition to recording country music, Tina was the inspiration for the Waylon Jennings – Willie Nelson classic Good Hearted Woman.”

According to SongsWithEarlierHistories.com, “Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson wrote ‘Good Hearted Woman’ in a room at the Fort Worther Motel in Forth Worth, TX, in 1969, inspired by an ad for an Ike & Tina Turner show saying: ‘Tina Turner singing songs about good-hearted women loving good-timing men.’ Jennings started writing the song and asked Nelson to help him finish it during a late-night poker game. By all accounts, Nelson’s contribution was minimal, with his third wife Connie recalling, ‘The only part Willie came up with was ‘Through teardrops and laughter they walk through this world hand in hand.’ Waylon said, ‘That’s it! That’s what’s missing’ and gave Willie half the song.’

Waylon and Willie each released it as a single and although their version together and Tina recorded later as well. Take a listen:
