One of country music’s hottest rising stars, Colin Stough doubles down on his reputation as a whiskey-soaked storyteller with the release of his newest single, “White Trash.”
Co-written by Stough, Jamie Collazo, and Kenny Whitmire, and produced by James LeBlanc and Phillip White, the fresh tune comes across as a gritty, unapologetic cry from the self-described “white trash” outcast.
Right out of the gate, Stough speaks his truth like a true outlaw, detailing his weekend run-in with the law that replaced his appearance at Sunday morning service. However, he admits it’s not a big strain on his conscience because while he knows his soul “could use some savin’, there ain’t no sense in prayin’ for me now.”

“I went to jail on a Sunday/ When I was supposed to be at church/ I got let out on a Monday/ Yeah I’s a little late to work/ Yeah I could use some education/ My soul could use some savin’/ There ain’t no sense in prayin’ for me now/ I ain’t changin’ my ways,” he sings.
His raw-edged swagger continues to shine bright while the lyrics paint the picture of someone who’s been judged, written off, and jaded by others. Instead of trying to clean up his image though, he’s decided to lean into his rebellious ways with pride.
“I’m nothin’ but white trash/ You can kiss my ass/ Yeah I know I’m down bad/ Nothing but a red flag/ You know I kinda like it like that/ I guess I’m white trash,” the Mississippi native sings, letting his gritty vocals take over the chorus.
The words behind the southern rock tune might make it seem like Stough is wearing his scars like a badge of honor and moving through life with a middle finger in the air and a devilish smirk on his face, but as the story goes on, it becomes clear there’s a strong undertone of pain lurking.
The wounds of rejection and feeling as if he let himself down by living up to the low expectations others set for him becomes evident mid-way through the track as he reflects on his life choices.
He sings, “They said I’ll never be nothin’/ I guess that wasn’t a lie/ You know that I still love ‘em/ And I put on a smile/ My so-called buddies love to talk to shit about me when I’m not around.”

Nevertheless, “White Trash” finds Stough staying true to his unapologetic attitude and rebellious southern grit as he previews his next musical chapter. This release marks the start of all the new music the Season 21 American Idol finalist promises to be working on this spring.
Since his time on the singing competition show, Stough’s life has seen a dramatic change. Taking that leap of faith earned him an impressive third-place finish, a deal with 19 Recordings / BMG Nashville, and a breakout debut with songs like “Bad Day” and “I Still Talk to Jesus.” Plus, last year, his fans got a hearty dose of his rebellious spirit with his Lookin’ for Home EP.
Now, he’s gearing up to hit the road for a run of select performances throughout the summer and early fall. After appearing in his home state for the Mississippi Makers Fest on May 10, the emerging act will make his long-awaited return to Nashville’s CMA Fest, once again bringing his talent to the Hard Rock Stage on Saturday June 7.
