Megan Moroney Drops Buzz-Worthy Breakup Anthem, ‘6 Months Later’

Megan Moroney’s next heartbreak anthem is finally here. After months of teasing the tune across socials and building major buzz in the process, “6 Months Later” is finally out now.

Last week, the songstress gave into the overwhelming pleas of her fans and decided to announce the June 20 release date via Instagram.

She wrote, “Your next girlfriend will be so lucky! 6.20” in the caption alongside two photos featuring a bedazzled pink landline to coincide with the song’s clever narrative.

Based on the snippets that have circulated the internet, fans have already fallen in love, but today they get to hear the full story.

Inside The All-Too-Relatable Story

Produced by Kristian Bush and co-written by Moroney with Ben Williams, David “Messy” Mescon, and Rob Hatch, “6 Months Later” serves as a brutally honest reflection on the all-too-familiar story of an ex who walked away, only to come back six months later with apologies and regrets.

She starts off by setting the scene, revealing that the drama all began in November of 2019 when she got her heart broken after the guy she was seeing admitted he felt they were “better off strangers” than lovers. The Georgia native goes on to describe the unbearable pain she was feeling in that moment of rejection.

“I was barely alive/ Out of 6 feet deep I was 5/ Pretty sure they called a hearse outside/ Ok that’s dramatic but I survived…”

No Second Chances

However just as she’s starting to move on and find some healing, her ex realizes he’s messed up. Now that he’s gone to therapy and finally found himself to be “willing and able,” he’s come back for a second chance.

Moroney’s gritty vocals cut through the upbeat, catchy tune as she reaches the chorus, informing the heartbreaker that he’s run out of chances in her book.

“Then I survived/ The ”Hey Meg I think I want you back,/ I’m a couple drinks in thinking it’s my bad/ That I let you walk away and let you go/It’s a tale as old as time I guess/ When you couldn’t care more, I couldn’t care less/ You’re a little too late to the party, heartbreaker/ What doesn’t kill you calls you 6 months later,” she delivers, clearly displaying power and confidence in her decision.

First Live Performance Of “6 Months Later”

Moroney performed the already fan-favorite track during her set at Barefoot Country Music Festival on Thursday evening, just hours before the song was released to streaming platforms. In videos captured by festivalgoers, fans could be heard screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs, which is quite impressive given that the song hadn’t even been released yet.

“6 Months Later” comes hot on the heels of Megan Moroney’s collaboration with Kenny Chesney, “You Had To Be There” and marks the second release since her sophomore album, Am I Okay?.

The song gives fans another look into her next album, which she recently admitted is going to be “a lot happier” music than fans have seen from her recently. However, Moroney promises there will be at least one “really gut-wrenching” track on the forthcoming project.

Along with teasing the themes of her new era, she told Audacy’s Katie Neal that she has already picked out the color scheme to represent this musical chapter. The mystery color will follow her green Lucky era, and her blue coded Am I Okay? project.

Megan Moroney continues to build the anticipation among listeners while on the road for her headlining AM I OKAY? TOUR. The 50-date North American trek finds the country star performing some of her biggest shows to date.
