Russell Dickerson Discusses The Unexpected Rise Of ‘Happen To Me’ And Creating A Viral Dance Trend [Exclusive]

Not only is Russell Dickerson a show-stopping performer and unstoppable songwriter, but now he can also add choreographer to his resume. With the release of his single, “Happen To Me,” which is also being dubbed the song of the summer by fans everywhere, Dickerson decide to create his own accompanying dance that has since turned into a viral trend.

With a few hip sways and groove-worthy moves, the country sensation had further built the excitement and love surrounding this tune.

“It just came out of nowhere. I don’t know. Just being dumb and that’s why I think it’s so easy. Anybody can do it,” he said of his choreography skills.

Written by Dickerson, Chase McGill, Jessie Jo Dillon and Chris LaCorte, “Happen To Me” paints a picture of a couple of strangers who meet on a night out and end up finding the cure to heartache with some no-strings-attached fun.

The upbeat jam gained tremendous traction online, earning over 25 million views across social media, and continued to rise in popularity with its release. It was then officially sent to country radio with 66 total station adds on March 10. Dickerson’s signature pop country sound comes out in full force and now has countless fans singing along to the chorus that pays tribute to Cyndi Lauper’s iconic “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

Reflecting On The Massive Impact Of “Happen To Me”

When asked if he could have ever imagined this song would become the song of the summer, he honestly responded, “I did not think that it was going to be as huge as it is.”

“Honestly, no. I mean, you hope that, but this song really was just, it was coming out when it was supposed to come out anyways and it was just like, oh dude, great song for live show a little energy, a pump me up…I’m glad it’s such a fun song too cause that’s me. That’s my vibe. It’s Russellmania, it’s an RD party, it’s vibes.”

The song become such a staple in his 2025 live shows, that he’s previously found himself giving into the demands of fans and performing it twice on stage.

“It just felt right. We ended with ‘Blue Tacoma’ or whatever, and I didn’t feel like the night was done. We had to play it again,” he explained.
