Brothers Osborne’s lead singer T.J. Osborne has come out publicly as gay.
T.J. spoke with Time saying that he’s been out to family and friends for years. He said, “I want to get to the height of my career being completely who I am. I mean, I am who I am, but I’ve kept a part of me muted, and it’s been stifling.”
He said he worried that coming out will look opportunistic, or attention-seeking. “People will ask, ‘Why does this even need to be talked about?’ and personally, I agree with that,” he says. “But for me to show up at an awards show with a man would be jaw-dropping to people. It wouldn’t be like, ‘Oh, cool!”
His brother and bandmate John Osborne tells Time he was emotional when his brother, T.J., first told him after he’d signed a publishing deal and around the time they signed a record deal. “If I had to have all my money and success erased for my brother to be truly fulfilled in life, I wouldn’t even think about it. Not for a second,” John says.
Since the article was released, other country stars have shared their support for T.J.
