Darius Rucker Refused the Star Treatment When He Transitioned to Country: ‘I Was Going to Give It All I Had’

Darius Rucker was already a huge superstar thanks to the success of Hootie & the Blowfish when he released his first country song in 2008.  But instead of riding in like a big shot expecting special treatment, he did the opposite and paid his dues all over again.

People magazine shared an exclusive clip of Darius Rucker on Clint Black’s upcoming series “Taking In Circles” where he told Clint, “[In} the very first meeting about the record I said ‘What do you do if you’re the low guy?  What do you do if you’re the new guy?’

“They were like, ‘Well, you do a radio tour.  But we didn’t think you would do that.’  And I said, ‘Light it up.'”  Darius did a massive radio tour because he wanted to earn his way onto the airwaves like everybody else.

“[I] was like, ‘if you play my song, great.  If not, hey man we had a beer, it was cool.’  We went around with that attitude, and people liked the song.”

That song was his first #1 country hit, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”.

Clint’s “Talking in Circles” episode with Darius debuts May 22nd on the Circle Network.
