Tracy Chapman Reacts To Luke Combs’ Cover of ‘Fast Car’

Luke Combs’ rendition of Tracy Chapman’s iconic song “Fast Car” has taken the music world by storm.

‘Fast Car’ is the first country cover of a pop song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Blake Shelton covered Michael Buble’s ‘Home.’

In an interview with “Billboard” Chapman expressed her surprise at finding herself on the country charts but conveyed her gratitude for the honor. She said, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car’.”

Luke’s version has generated at least $500,000 in publishing royalties.  Chapman owns the writers’ AND publisher’s share of the song and will receive the majority of those royalties.

All this attention has sent people back to Tracy’s original version as well.  The “weekly consumption” of her song has increased 44% since Luke’s cover came out.
